    Aeron Stool Features

Aeron changed the way everyone thought about office chairs—from its revolutionary look to its advanced ergonomics. The design of the stool provides healthy comfort and balanced body support, and an innovative footring adjustment lets you adjust the footring independently of the stool’s seat height adjustment. That means you will have customized comfort and ergonomic support throughout the stool’s full height range.

    No Pain, Much Gain

The pioneering PostureFit mechanism and Pellicle® suspension help make the Aeron Stool comfortable to sit in, even for hours on end. PostureFit supports the way your pelvis tilts naturally forward, so your spine stays aligned and you avoid back pain. The Pellicle suspension conforms to your body, reduces pressure points, and provides unparalleled support.

    Convenient Adjustments

You can adjust the seat height, of course. You can also adjust the footring separately so that your feet are resting at just the right height when you’re seated. You don’t have to climb off the stool to change the footring height either. Doesn’t that feel good?

    Stay Alert

The high, wide, contoured back takes the pressure off your lower spine. Armrests slope slightly down in the back for the most natural and comfortable support. The “waterfall” front edge of the seat takes the pressure off your thighs, so your blood keeps circulating and you stay alert and focused.

    Be One with Your Seating

The Aeron Stool moves effortlessly with your whole body, as if your body were telling the seat what to do, the patented Kinematic Tilt mechanism lets your neck, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles pivot naturally.

    Stay Cool

The unique, breathable Pellicle suspension dissipates the body heat that builds up while you work, so it keeps you cool and comfortable.

    It’s Got the Look

The Aeron Stool has been copied because it’s a beautiful and distinctive chair. It was the first office chair to find a better way than foam and upholstery to keep people comfortable at work. The stool has the same stand-out look that fits right in, whether your home office is high-tech, elegant, casual, or a room that doubles as a gym. Three Pellicle weaves in neutral colors and a range of finish options let you create the stool you really want.

    Aeron Back Support Options

Aeron Chair PostureFit Back / Lumbar Support

Additional back support on the Classic Aeron Chair is optional, although, highly-recommended for those who sit for long periods of time or suffer from lower back pain.

    Lumbar Pad (Optional)

Promoting natural, unforced, spinal alignment and muscle balance even when the sitter is not in a reclined posture is important. The lumbar pad is an optional lower lumbar back support device available on the Classic Aeron Stool. Ideal for long duration sitters who need some additional support.

    PostureFit™ Back Support (Optional)

The PostureFit is an optional ergonomic device you can add to your Aeron Stool. It provides the maximum support available to your lower back. If you’ve had lower back pain issues in the past with your chairs, we recommend you add this additional support.

PostureFit It is made up of 3 elements:

    • Butterfly Pad
    • Wishbone frame
    • Adjustment Knob

The butterfly pad is the central element of the device. It’s what supports the pelvis, allowing it to sustain a forward rotation, keeping it from rolling backward into the void between your lower back and the chair. It works in conjunction with the Pellicle® suspension of the Aeron chair, molding to the user's contours to provide custom-fitted support. Unlike traditional lumbar where more support means more pressure, PostureFit offers gentle support, marrying to the contours of the body. In fact, you may not realize it is there until you take it away!

The wishbone frame and the adjustment knob work together to control the degree of support the user requires. The wishbone frame also holds the butterfly pad in place and its shape complements the lines of the Aeron chair, enhancing its design. It is available in three sizes: A, B, and C.

    Caster Options

    Standard Casters (Standard)

Designed for standard commercial and office carpet these 2.5-inch casters are the most commonly selected caster option.

    Hardwood Casters (Optional)

Designed for non-carpeted floors. They have a thin rubberized coating to prevent floor marring. In addition, hard-floor casters have less roll to prevent the chair from rolling across the room when you push away from your desk.

    Deep Carpet Casters (Optional)

Designed to move easily through thicker carpet than what is found in a typical office. These 3-inch casters are slightly larger than the standard 2.5-inch casters.

    Design Story

    Don Chadwick & Bill Stumpf

In the 1970s, Herman Miller was deep into research in the field of office ergonomics and work seating and challenged Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf to rethink traditional designs of office chairs. Their research produced the award-winning Ergon chair in 1976, and Equa chair in 1984. Building upon what they had learned, Stumpf and Chadwick began working in the early 1990s on a design for the world’s most comfortable office chair. Keeping in mind Charles Eames’ point that chairs should be designed for how people sit rather than how they should sit, they set about designing a chair that would: (1) Promote the health of the person sitting in it (2) Move and adjust as simply as possible (3) Support a person in any position (4) Really fit large or small people (5) Be environmentally responsible.

The result, Herman Miller Aeron Chair, was introduced in 1994 to immediate success and became an icon of contemporary design. It introduced the use of a semi-transparent mesh-material called Pellicle, which allowed air to circulate against the sitter’s back, as well as conform to the shape and build of the user so that pressure on the impact areas is minimized.

The visual transparency of the chair exemplified the idea of transparent architecture and technology, a design strategy dedicated to producing objects that would be less opaque and intrusive in the environment. Far ahead of its time in that it was composed of mostly recycled materials, the chair was engineered to be easily disassembled and recycled. Notable among the numerous design honors given to Chadwick and Stumpf during their careers was the inclusion of their revolutionary Aeron chair in the New York Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) permanent collection.
