    Aeron Chair Features

Aeron Office Chair by Herman Miller

An adjustable, ergonomic task chair available in three sizes with a seat and back composed of semi transparent flexible mesh called Pellicle®. Available in either Basic or Highly Adjustable models, the Basic chair shares the Pneumatic lift, Kinemat Tilt mechanism and Tilt Tension adjustment with the Highly Adjustable chair, which offers all the options.

    Supportive, breathable Pellicle® suspension
Instead of traditional fabric and foam, Aeron's mesh seating surface conforms to the sitter's shape, evenly distributes weight to eliminate pressure points and lets air pass thru for cool comfort.

    Kinemat Tilt mechanism
The built-in dynamics apparatus allows the body to pivot naturally for proper support from forward to reclining postures.

    Tilt Tension adjustment
Allows the user to control the resistance felt when leaning back in the chair.

    Pneumatic Lift
The seat height adjustment uses compressed air to raise the seat height from a low of 16 in. to a high of 20.5 in.

    Lumbar Pad (Optional)
An ergonomic device that can be adjusted vertically through a 4.5-inch height range. Its depth is also adjustable.

    PostureFit (Optional)
A highly-adjustable ergonomic device that offers gentle support to the pelvis and can be adjustable in and out for stronger, firmer lumbar support.

    Adjustable Arms (Optional)
Armrests pivot inward 17.5 degrees for keying and outward 15 degrees for mousing. Arm height adjusts independently within a four-inch vertical range.

    Tilt Limiter (Optional)
The user can control and limit the tilt range.

    Forward Tilt (Optional)
Positions the seat angle 5 degrees forward, a posture favored by many computer users.

    PostureFit® Back Support

Aeron Chair PostureFit Back / Lumbar Support

PostureFit is an ergonomic device available as an option on the Aeron chair. It is made up of 3 elements:

    • Butterfly pad
    • Wishbone frame
    • Adjustment knob

The butterfly pad is the central element of the device. It’s what supports the pelvis, allowing it to sustain a forward rotation, keeping it from rolling backwards into the void between your lower back and the chair. It works in conjunction with the Pellicle suspension of the Aeron chair, molding to the user's contours to provide custom-fitted support. Unlike traditional lumbar where more support means more pressure, PostureFit offers gentle support, marrying to the contours of the body. In fact, you may not realize it is there until you take it away!

The wishbone frame and the adjustment knob work together to control the degree of support the user requires. The wishbone frame also holds the butterfly pad in place and its shape complements the lines of the Aeron chair, enhancing its design. It is available in three sizes: A, B and C.

    Caster Options

    What casters are available?
The Aeron Chair from comes standard with carpet casters. These casters are designed for standard office carpet. Other casters available are hard-floor and deep-carpet casters.

    What are hard-floor casters?
Hard-Floor casters are designed for non-carpeted floors. They have a thin rubberized coating to prevent floor marring. In addition, hard-floor casters have less roll to prevent the chair from flying across the room when you push away from your desk.

    What are deep-carpet casters?
Deep-Carpet casters are designed for carpet thicker than that found in a typical office. These 3" casters are slightly larger than the standard 2.5" casters. They are designed to ensure that the chair moves easily on thicker carpet.

If I order hard-floor or deep-carpet casters, can I keep the original standard casters as well?
Yes. We will include the original standard casters along with your specialized casters for a nominal charge.

About the Designers: Don Chadwick & Bill Stumpf

“We were basically told to design the next-generation office chair.”
    — Don Chadwick

In the 1970s, Herman Miller was deep into research in the field of office ergonomics and work seating and challenged Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf to rethink traditional designs of office chairs. Their research produced the award-winning Ergon chair in 1976, and Equa chair in 1984. Building upon what they had learned, Stumpf and Chadwick began working in the early 1990s on a design for the world’s most comfortable office chair. Keeping in mind Charles Eames’ point that chairs should be designed for how people sit rather than how they should sit, they set about designing a chair that would: (1) Promote the health of the person sitting in it (2) Move and adjust as simply as possible (3) Support a person in any position (4) Really fit large or small people (5) Be environmentally responsible.

The resulting Aeron chair was introduced in 1994 to immediate success, and has become an icon of contemporary design. It introduced the use of a semi-transparent mesh-material called Pellicle, which allowed air to circulate against the sitter’s back, as well as conform to the shape and build of the user so that pressure on the impact areas is minimized.

The visual transparency of the chair exemplified the idea of transparent architecture and technology, a design strategy dedicated to producing objects that would be less opaque and intrusive in the environment. Far ahead of its time in that it was composed of mostly recycled materials, the chair was engineered to be easily disassembled and recycled. Notable among the numerous design honors given to Chadwick and Stumpf during their careers was the inclusion of their revolutionary Aeron chair in the New York Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) permanent collection.

    About Herman Miller

Founded in 1923 and recognized today throughout the world as an innovator in office and residential furniture design, Herman Miller has been ranked since 1986 among the top ten in Fortune Magazine’s annual list of the 500 most admired companies. Their pioneering research into producing environmentally responsible furniture has earned them GreenGuard Indoor Air Quality certification for most of their products. Aesthetically, many of Herman Miller’s iconic designs, particularly from the 1940s and 1950s, are valuable collector’s items and on permanent display in museums such as the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Smithsonian Institution.

In 1933, new furniture designs created by Herman Miller designer Gilbert Rohde exhibiting the smooth lines and unembellished shapes of the emerging mid-century modern furniture style were exhibited at the Chicago World’s Fair. In 1944, Rohde’s successor George Nelson designed such enduring icons as the Platform bench, and was famously responsible for teaming the company with such influential design artists as Alexander Girard, Isamu Noguchi and Charles and Ray Eames. Charles Eames, widely regarded as a genius in contemporary furniture design, produced one of Herman Miller’s most successful products in 1956, the elegant Eames Lounge chair. In 1994, Don Chadwick and Bill Stumpf introduced a new office chair called Aeron (derived from the word aeration, which describes how the mesh suspension promotes comfort), which became an immediate worldwide success and earned a spot in the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) as well. Today, Herman Miller continues to attract world-famous designers like Jeff Weber, Jerome Caruso, the Studio 7.5 Design Team in Berlin, Yves Béhar, Mark Goetz and many more.

If the purpose of design is to solve problems, and the relationship between design and business is synergistic, then Herman Miller today continues to be in the vanguard of design as a fundamental part of strategic planning.
